I believe that the hippos are amongst of the most strange creatures in the world. According to the first attempts to classify these animals grouped them together with different species like horses, elephants and pigs. The current theories assume that closest relatives are the whales and dolphins evidenced by fossil records, DNA and molecular systematics.
The hippos spend the most of the day asleep, standing in water and usually come out to land in the night to get food. They spend 3-5 minutes under the water before coming up for breathing automatically, which mechanism is still working during sleeping. Despite their body shape and weight of 1.5-2 tons they are able to run at a speed of 30 km/h. It is interesting, that besides their usual vegetarian diet, sometimes they eat small animals as well.
Due to the tendency to become aggressive and having bite force of 8100 newtons with their 40-50 cm teeth and records of deadly attacks against humans, the hippos known as dangerous animals. Although they disappeared from several previously inhabited area, they became invasive specie in Colombia, after the death of the infamous drug lord, Pablo Escobar, who brought four hippos to one of his haciendas.
